TP Link TL-WR841N Router Reviews:

The TP-Link TL-WR841N is a very inexpensive router with a simple design to match its price. It’s a curved rectangular shape with two large, non-replaceable antennas protruding from its back. It isn’t much to look at even though it is at least small enough to hide away with minimal fuss. You can also screw the router to a wall courtesy of mounting points on its base.

Does TP Link TL-WR841N Router perform well? I tested the TL-WR841N at CNET’s offices, where there are walls and many Wi-Fi devices that are out of my control. Commonly, walls shorten the reach of a Wi-Fi signal, and other Wi-Fi devices create interference. As with all Wi-Fi routers, your results may vary basing on where you live.

Thinking about its cost, I didn’t expect much but the TL-WR841N did well in testing. At close range (about 15 feet) the router scored a sustained real-world Wi-Fi speed of 83Mbps. When I increased the distance to 75 feet, it then averaged about 34Mbps. Check out the chart below to see how that compares to other routers.

Range is not the forte of the TL-WR841N. In my testing, 75 feet is about as far as I could get from the router before my connection started to diminish. Further out, it was hard to get connected to the router and hold a steady connection. This distance, however, varies relying on the amount of walls and large objects in between (there was just one wall in my tests). Usually, in a typical home, chances are you won’t be able to connect to the TP Link TL-WR841N Router from more than 120 feet way. This is short compared to 802.11 ac routers, but compared with single-band Wireless N routers that came out 10 years ago, the TP-Link’s range is rather standard.

Final:

Keep in mind that if you have a very fast broadband link– one that has a download speed of 50Mbps or faster– the TP Link TL-WR841N Router might not have enough power to consistently bring that level of performance to your wireless devices. For that you need a dual-band router with Gigabit support, like the Asus RT-N66U or the Linksys E4200, or even better yet an 802.11 ac router. On the other hand, if your Internet speed is 30Mbps for download or slower, the WRT841N will generally suffice.

In my opinion, TP-Link products are the best, high quality Internet products on the market today. I own three of their routers – both of the compact and full-size variety – and they work, as advertised, right out of the box. The setup Menus that you can access to configure each of their Internet products are intuitive and easy to use. The full-size TL-WR841N router that cost me all of $23.00 worked right out of the box with no setup required – it just doesn’t get any better than that
