TP Link Archer MR400 Router

TP Link Archer MR400 AC1200 Wireless Router Reviews:

The TP Link Archer MR400 Router is an updated version of the Archer MR200 Router. The are some improvements on the Archer MR400 mainly on the WiFi capability. The wireless capabilities have been strengthened to AC1200 from AC750. Everything else is still the same. Such as the Archer MR200, it only support LTE CAT 4 150Mbps and it only have 100Mbps Ethernet LAN port.

If you ever used other TP-Link routers, you will be very acquainted with the interface on the TP Link Archer MR400. It supplies quite a comprehensive set of features you would need on a 4G modem The single most important is the Archer MR400 may be used on all telcos in Malaysia. I also like the fact that it can support SMS and sending USSD code. It will be handy for receiving TAC and checking data usage on some Telco.

The TP Link Archer MR400 also features a data usage counter and limitation feature. Sadly, it does not support band selection, something I hope it will be available in the future. But, it does support custom DNS not like Huawei 4G modem router.

TP-Link Archer MR400 also features a simple QoS and parental control feature. I do not suggest using QoS on 4G connection. As for the parental control, it is a simple time limitation and content keyword web filter. Nothing fancy like TP-Link Homecare parental control. TP-Link also included a VPN server but most if not all mobile ISP provide private IP so you can’t really run a VPN server on 4G LTE mode.

The 4G LTE specs on the Archer MR400 only support LTE CAT4 150Mbit/s thinking about some devices supporting up to CAT11 now. Yet for some cases, using a CAT4 LTE modem is adequate considering that the area may not support faster speeds or maybe the ISP plan does not support fast speed. The Archer MR400 is a good choice if your carrier does limit the speed or you do not stay in city areas with a faster 4G+ or LTE-A network.

I tested the speed of the Archer MR400 with Celcom. The signal coverage at my location is not well and I am staying in an apartment. I am just getting more than 10Mbps on the Archer MR400 and yet sufficient to say that my iPhone X gets the same result as the Archer MR400 here. So, at least the Archer MR400 is performing the same as a CAT12 device at a location with no LTE-A.

Final:
TP-Link Archer MR400 is a decent 4G wireless router. It is a device to share a 4G LTE internet connection over WiFi. The Archer MR400 with updated WiFi ability is definitely a welcomed upgrade.

Good 4G router, reasonable price. Version 3 has the external removable aerials, which is what you want so you can fit an external aerial like the Pointing XPOL-A0001 to improve the 4G LTE signal that it picks up.
See the signals I have been getting with the Pointing fitted to the outside of my house.
The TP Link fired straight up as soon as I inserted the Three 4G data SIM I bought. This replaced the crappy Huawei B311 router that Three shipped with the SIM card as it kept dropping the internet connection every 45 to 60 minutes. This apparently is a known fault and Three are recalling these Huawei routers.
TP Link MR400 has enough advanced settings to set it up the way you want including parental controls where you can limit access to the internet or only certain websites during specific times. Great to manage the kids’s screen time.
Select the device (by MAC address) and select the “white list” option to block this device from accessing the internet.
